Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season on the Atlantic is June through November every year. This year is expected to be mild if El Niño comes through, but that hasn’t been confirmed just yet. So, it’s better to be prepared. Here are some quick tips for hurricane preparedness.

  1. Have a plan: emergency phone numbers, know nearest shelters.

  2. Emergency supply kits

    1. Food and water: canned goods/nonperishable items and 1 gallon of water per person per day. Have enough of both for at least 3 days

    2. Meds: personal prescriptions and emergency first aid kits

    3. Power sources: such as battery packs, flashlights, and generators if necessary

    4. Safety and personal items: important documents and medical records if needed

  3. Fill your gas tank in your vehicles and move into garage/under cover

  4. Have emergency kit in the car as well as blankets

  5. Clear your yard: make sure that nothing can blow into and damage your home

  6. Cover windows/doors: plywood the outside of windows with nails or close storm shutters

  7. Check CO monitors to make sure they’re working properly

  8. Be ready to evacuate if necessary: keep an eye on the news to know if you’re required to leave for safety concerns
