Tips for Filing an Insurance Claim

No one wants to have to file an insurance claim, but let’s be honest, unforeseen events happen. One way or another, chances are that you’ll have to file a claim at least once in your lifetime. Here are some of our quick tips for filing a homeowner’s insurance claim most efficiently.

1.     File claim immediately: the sooner you file, the sooner your insurance company can fix the damage and put money in your pocket right away to cover the cost of repairs needed

2.     File police report if necessary: if filed get a copy for the insurance adjuster

3.     Document damage: photos, videos and keep inventory of damaged items. Try to get model numbers and labels in the photos

4.     Make temporary repairs: within your means, try to fix things temporarily until it’s taken care of. Keep copies of receipts of purchases and show why the immediate repairs were needed

5.     Communicate with adjuster: communication is key. Make sure to be upfront and contact often until the issues are resolved.

6.     Consider using your own contractor: you don’t have to use the insurance companies’ contractors

7.     Living expenses are sometimes covers: make sure to check and see if your insurance company covers living expenses such as hotel stays and restaurant meals if damage forces you to leave your home.
